Weight management is the cornerstone of effective falconry training. As I’ve discovered through years of working with birds of prey, a raptor’s weight directly influences its behavior, motivation, and overall performance in the field. When managed properly, weight control creates the perfect balance between a bird that’s eager to hunt yet healthy enough to perform at its peak.

In my experience, consistent monitoring is crucial. Each morning, I weigh my birds before feeding them. The morning weight tells me how much weight the bird lost overnight, which helps me calculate the day’s feeding amount.

Here’s my typical routine:

  1. Morning weigh-in: Place the bird on a digital scale, ensuring the jesses are lifted to avoid affecting the reading.
  2. Record keeping: The weight is logged in the falconry journal along with notes about behavior.
  3. Feeding calculation: Based on the current weight, target weight, and planned activities
  4. Evening check: If necessary, weigh again in the evening to verify the weight loss rate

I’ve found that maintaining detailed records helps me understand each bird’s individual metabolism and response to different conditions.

  • Maintain an optimal flying weight range consistently

The system works by understanding that a raptor processes most of its food within 22 hours. By carefully measuring food intake, you can predict what the bird will weigh at the same time tomorrow. This predictability is invaluable for planning successful hunting sessions.

The Feast and Fast Approach

Another effective method, especially for birds of prey, is the “feast and fast” approach. This alternates between heavier feeding days and lighter ones, closely mimicking how raptors eat in the wild.

On feast days or days practising yarak, larger meals are provided after successful training or hunting sessions. On fast days (which are actually days with reduced food), training sessions are shorter and less demanding.

This approach creates powerful food motivation on feast days while maintaining a healthy weight range that can vary by 10-50 grams depending on the raptor’s size.

Essential Equipment for Weight Management

  1. Digital scale: Must be reliable and accurate to at least 1g increments
  2. Weight management journal: For tracking daily weights and behavior
